What Does it Mean to “Retire”?
One day I began questioning our team name – Team Retire Before 25. “Is that really something I believe in? Do I want to advertise and promote this concept?” I asked myself.
Well, thankfully I was simultaneously reading the book, “The Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey (highly recommended) and it just so happens that he mentions retirement in his book. Here’s what he says:
“What Retirement Isn’t… Investing for retirement… doesn’t necessarily mean investing to quit your job. If you hate your career path, change it. You should do something with your life that lights your fire and lets you use your gifts. Retirement in America has come to mean “save enough money so I can quit the job I hate.” That is a bad life plan.” (Dave Ramsey, The Total Money Makeover og. 152)
Wow. Isn’t this what most of us picture when we hear the word, “retirement”? The word has come to mean, “Yes! I don’t have to WORK anymore.” But I agree with Dave Ramsey, that is a bad life plan. I want to work. I just want to work at something that I believe in. Dave continues with his rant on retirement:
“When I speak of retirement, I think of security. Security means choices. (That’s why I think retirement means that work is an option.) You can choose to write a book, to design churches, or to spend time with your grandkds. You need to reach the point where your money works harder than you do. … You already possess the ability to quit your job, and if you don’t like your work, you should consider doing that. If not today, develop a five year gameplan for transitioning into what God designed you to do; however, don’t wait till you’re sixty-five to do what you love.”
I’ve always clarified that Team Retire Before 25 means you “could” retire at age 25. But who really wants to?! Not me, man. Moses never retired. I am excited about what God has in store for me. Retirement means choices, and I’ll add my own thought, and, freedom. Choices & Freedom. Beautiful.
Ready for security, choices and freedom? Ready to retire earlier than most?
